If I am really honest, I have far too many lip balms and not enough lipstick. That is because I probably don't wear lipstick very often. However, I do exfoliate my lips quite a bit. Lip exfoliation is the perfect way to prepare a good base for your favourite lipstick. What is my routine for prepping my lips? I have a few tricks to share of course!
I got the idea for this post from my lovely followers on Instagram as well as a blog article I was reading just recently. Thanks so much to my lovely Instagram followers. I am always so excited be the new friendships I form on different platforms and how many new people come and visit my blog as a result of these connections. If you haven't followed me head over to Set to Glow's Instagram page here!
I have been trying a lot of new Korean products lately and I recently spotted a cool little product called Collagen Nourish Lips Membrane on another blog that I wanted to incorporate into my lip prep routine. This blog post will be the perfect time to try it. I will be writing a blog post on some other Korean beauty products too soon. I often order from amazon.com and use hopshopgo to deliver the packages to Australia. The prices are just so much cheaper on amazon and they also stock a lot more things that other websites - which is very convenient.
Quite a lot of people spend a lot of time exfoliating their skin and two places I know that neglected are lips and feet! I have also planned a post on my favourite chemical exfoliators so don't despair. My foot prep guide shouldn't be too far away either. (Your feet are not really a glamorous topic I know...) So what do I do to make sure I have the prefect lip surface for my expensive lipstick? I exfoliate and moisturise of course!
I do this a couple of times a week, however if you are time poor, you can do this the night before a big event!
1. Exfoliate Your Lips
I use an old toothbrush and a bit of sugar lip scrub to exfoliate my lips in circular motions. I like keeping my lip scrub natural, and different people might have different ideas about the best natural lip scrub. You can make your own by mixing a tablespoon of brown sugar with just enough honey (or olive oil) to get it to stick together. Once a week (twice at the very max) rub the scrub onto your lips and let it sit for 1 minute. I wipe it off with damp gauze. If you read my blog regularly, you would know that I love love love buying medical gauze in bulk on eBay. Head over to my cleanser review to check it out here - Tips and Tricks: Clarisonics are too Harsh for me. I use French Girl Organic Rose Lip Polish as the smell is not too overpowering and it is certified organic. I use it so much that I just ordered a new one.
2. Nourish Your Lips
This step is new for me and it was a lot of fun since my lovely little korean lip masks are lip shaped. I bought these Collagen Nourish Lips Membranes from amazon. The trick with these is to use them on a Thursday night so your lips are plump and moisturised for the weekend. You'll need to wear it for 30 minutes while it works too. I read a lot of reviews before I used this since I have sensitive skin. Since none of the ingredients rang any alarm bells I decided to give the membrane a go. Quite a few people said they needed to lie down to wear it, so I fully expected not to be able to do anything for the 30 minutes. When I pulled it out of the package, there was a lot of fluid ( see above ). It was super cooling and stuck to my face really well. The photo below of me wearing it is in the kitchen because there is good light in there, but also because I actually did housework while I was wearing the mask. I don't waste time do I?! I have to say that the membrane is a little bit of fun, but I didn't feel glamorous wearing it. I feel like I should have taken a more fun photo than the one below. But honestly, I was doing the washing up which wasn't fun. Maybe if I had a bunch of girlfriends round I could make the experience into a mask party. But you can't talk of course while wearing it...
After the 30 minutes was up, the patch seemed to be less wet and my lips were definitely more moisturised. In some of the reviews I read people were talking about a plumping effect, which I am a bit dubious about. There is nothing in the ingredients to suggest the membrane would do that, so I will let you know in a few days whether that is the case!
3. Moisturise Your Lips
The next step is to moisturise. You can use a regular moisturiser or lip balm or you can try a lip sleeping mask instead. After I used my Collagen Nourish Lips Membranes from amazon I slathered on another fav Korean product of mine Lineage Lip Sleeping Mask.
4. Keep up the Lip Balm Use
During the week it is a great idea to keep up your lip balm use. I have too many lip balms to count, however right now I am using Burt's Bees Lip Crayons. You can check out my review of them here. They have just the right amount of colour and are super moisturising.
5. When it Comes Time to Use Lipstick
So it's the big day and you want to look your best! I love a good lipstick and my favourite colour is red. I paint my nails red and get out my red lipstick stash which includes YSL, Tom Ford and Shiseido products. I usually wash my face and moisturise about an hour and a half before I have to go out. I make sure I have dry by plump lips and use lip liner and then two coats of lipstick. I seal my lipstick with a product called Lipcote. You paint it on afterwards and have to wait until it dries to close your mouth. Fortunately it dies super quick!
