I am a BIG believer in only using products that work. So for skincare that means using active products. Let's face it; nothing works quite as well as preventative botox for wrinkles... However, using eye patches in the Aeroplane whilst travelling to London Fashion Week, Russia and Japan I am hooked. They are cooling, soothing and hydrating especially in the plane and the morning after you return back home. With this in mind I decided to try a few eye patches and compare them. Which one will be my winner for 2017 - it's the perfect time for a good eye treatment since we go into the festive season!
An eyepatch is a small patch that is worn in front of one eye. Traditionally, it's a cloth patch attached around the head by an elastic band or by a string, an adhesive bandage, or a plastic device which is clipped to a pair of glasses. Skincare eye patches on the other hand are basically like Korean sheet masks for under your eyes. Sheet masks, like eye patches, are face-shaped sheets of papers, fibres and/or gel fabrics soaked in serum solutions. They differ from paste type facial masks because you only need to apply, take off and pat the serum into your skin. Paste type masks require you to wash the product off and apply other skincare afterwards. Sheet masks and eye masks/patches are used once which means they are convenient and easy to use. Sheet masks originated in South Korea; however since Instagram has made them popular, mask sales are up around the world almost 60%! That's huge.
Allergies, weather, too little sleep, too many happy hour cocktails; just one thing gone wrong can leave your eyes out of sorts. Whether you're dealing with puffiness or dehydration, fine lines or dark circles, eye patches can help you achieve brighter, smoother, more refreshed eyes. You can also spend a fortune on them however I don't think you have to spend lots on them. As if you spend what some manufacturers are selling theirs for, you may as well get preventative botox!! For example there are Chanel Le Lift Firming Anti-Wrinkle Flash Eye Revitalizers at $130 for 10 sets and 111 Skin's Meso Infusion Overnight Micro Mask which is $187AUD for one lot of eye patches that you throw away afterwards!! I mean they say they are the ultimate at-home complexion treat, these clever patches have quickly become a staple in my skin care routine. Simply smooth over stubborn lines before bed and wake up to smooth, plump skin... But I don't know... So which patches did I try? After cleansing and drying I gave the following brands a go.
SKIN REPUBLIC Collagen Hydrogel Under Eye Patch 3 Pair Pack
It's weird reviewing these two patches because of the skyn product below that I love. However this is a new brand that I have seen in both Priceline and Chemist Warehouse in Sydney so I decided to give them a try. First off the packaging and logo could be a lot nicer (if anyone is an avid Set to Glow reader they will know I work in the packaging design industry). When you open the pack there are three individual foil packages for each of the three pairs which are unbranded. This lack of fills means the price is nice at $9.99AUD for the whole 3 pair pack. The eye patches themselves are more than ample and are sort of cotton material with green gel like backs. They have a very light scent which I am not sure I am too fussed about but it is not overpowering. They include collagen, green tea, aloe vera and vitamins A & E to help target the 5 eye area agers - the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity and firmness, puffiness, dark circles and dryness. So far so good, I think I like the explanation on the pack more than some of the others I have read. Plus vitamins A & E are great antioxidants. They feel cooling on and the feeling lasts a little longer than the skyn ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels soothing feeling. The instructions say to leave these patches on for 30mins - none of the other patches have such a long treatment period! The thing I like most about these is the fact that they are green and jelly like you can actually see that the product has come off the patches when you gently peel these from your eye area after 30mins. My eyes are definitely more smooth and hydrated. I am torn between these and the skyn ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels. I'll need to try the SKIN REPUBLIC 24K Gold Aquagel Under Eye Patches next...
(There are a lot more ingredients in the eye patches but you get the idea. I think SKIN REPUBLIC should update their online information...)
Water, Glycerin, Sorbitol, Sodium Polyacrylate, Polyacrylic Acid, Castor Oil, Octyl Dodecanol, Kaolin, Cellulose Gum, Collagen, Tartaric Acid, Aluminum Glycinate, Methyl Paraben, Tocopheryl Acetate, Titanium Dioxide, Disodium EDTA, Allantoin, Chromume Oxides (Green), Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Fragrance.
SKIN REPUBLIC 24K Gold Aquagel Under Eye Patch 2 Pair Pack
By this stage in my eye patch journey I have worked out that I like the gel type eye patches the best. The SKIN REPUBLIC 24K Gold Aquagel Under Eye Patches are slightly more expensive ($12.99 for 2 pairs) than the SKIN REPUBLIC Collagen Hydrogel Under Eye Patches. When you open the outer pack up; the patches actually come in a little tray. I was surprised at how thick they actually were when I looked at them in the tray. Also; because these are labeled left eye and right eye I am reminded to tell you that I apply my eye patches in the wrong way. I apply them the other way around normally because I find they stick better to my eye area when the thicker part of the patch is closer to my nose. If you apply them that way the little scrunch marks on your nose get a look in too - the thinner side is more than enough to cover the other end of your eye area. These patches are way too thick to do that with; so I apply them the right way around - the thinner bit closer to my nose.
I was a bit dubious about these ones because as soon as I applied them they started wandering down my cheeks. Clearly I am supposed to lie down when wearing these; which is a problem because I have WAAAAY too much to do to do that. The serum is too wet on the thick jelly like patches to stay on my eye area properly. When I bought them too; I was wondering whether the 25K Gold would actually do anything for me. While the Egyptians believed the healing powers of gold could cure all manner of physical, mental and spiritual ailments; I am pretty sure we shouldn't believe the hype when buying skincare. The metal can calm acne inflammation, reduce skin redness and protect against free radicals that lead to wrinkles and sun damage - but there is no scientific research exists that concludes the properties in gold are superior to any one other antioxidant. I admit that I did check the ingredients to make sure it was there. You can see from the below list that it is right at the bottom... Apparently these patches have light reflecting gold particles to conceal visible signs of ageing. They also include amino acids and peptides to help improve elasticity and reduce the appearance of puffiness. Chamomile and peony soothe and rejuvenate, while the antioxidants and flavonoids in rooibos nourish for brighter looking younger eyes. I left these 24k patches on for the 30mins as written on the pack; however before I even took them off, I could tell that I liked the SKIN REPUBLIC Collagen Hydrogel Under Eye Patches better. At least they stayed under my eyes properly.
After taking the SKIN REPUBLIC 24K Gold Aquagel Under Eye Patches off, my eye area was smoothed, hydrated and lovely looking. I could see light reflecting particles where they were; however once I put my moisturiser and serums on over my face, you couldn't see these any more. So I would probably just buy the SKIN REPUBLIC Collagen Hydrogel Under Eye Patches to save a bit of money...

skyn ICELAND Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels Patches 8 Pair Pack
These are the lovely eye patches that I took on the plane with me. I also had a mask date with my husband when we came back from our latest overseas trip. We both sat on the couch watching Netflix with these bad boys on. The directions say to apply these for a minimum of 10 minutes; however it is easy to forget them while watching TV. They have a sort of white plastic side and a gel area that goes face down onto your eye area. I found them to be of ample size for myself and my husband. They fit well under our eyes. These do feel cool and soothing; however I would like the cooling action to last a little bit longer. Once I use these I remove them and apply my serums and moisturisers and my area was pretty smooth. I am a repeat purchaser of these because of the price and the packaging. I love that they come supported properly in their little sachets because they are perfect for travelling. While they are not the cheapest patches I have bought ($27.33US for 8 on Amazon) I feel like I get a great product. Plus there is 8 pairs for that price; so if you ask me that is nothing to sneeze at.

Tonymoly Panda's Dream Eye Patch Single Pack
While I love the packaging and the concept of this Eye patch it is a bit hard to get out of the packaging. I feel like I am going to ruin the black eye patch because it is super thin. When you pull the set of patches out of their pouch they come supported by a sort of plastic mesh. However after this is removed the patches are super delicate. I will say though, the patches are super infused with serum. It's also not sticky or horrible feeling. The shape of these patches are super fun but they are harder to apply than other patches and of course, they are black in colour. Once on, they do adhere to the skin nicely and do not fall off. I vacuumed with these eye patches on my eyes. I also kept these patches for 20 minutes. While I can't say that they reduced dark circles around my eyes they did soothe and cool. a MAJOR plus is the fact that these black beauties are fragrance free. They're also only $5AUD a pair in Myer. Would I buy them again though? I am not sure I would since I prefer some of the other patches I have used.
Niacinamide – a form of Vitamin B3 that works well for overall brightening, lightening of hyper-pigmentation and dark circles • Bamboo Shoot Extract • Silicone, talc, and paraben free.
Advanced Night Repair Concentrated Recovery Eye Mask Single Pack
So these Eye patches are $18AUD for a single pair. Not the most expensive ones as I have detailed above but I was hoping that these were effective for that price. I bought mine at David Jones in the city on a lunch break. I was having a particularly bad day so I wanted something to relax at home with that wouldn't break the bank... The patches come in a two part sealed package and you have to pop one corner of the packaging to get the serum to flow into the rest of the package and onto the pads. That actually was pretty tricky so I pulled apart the whole thing and applied the serum to the pads myself... While these feel fresh while you have them on, and didn't aggravate my sensitive skin I really want to compare them to the cheaper priceline bought SKIN REPUBLIC products. I left these on for 20 minutes like the other eye patches; however I couldn't get past the packaging fail when I was paying so much more for them... They did seem to help brighten my eyes and I felt like I looked more awake... However I am not sure they are worth double or triple what I pay for other eye patches.
